Dear Hoover Families,

I am so excited to welcome you all to Hoover Elementary School!

At Hoover, we believe in the joy of learning. We know that our school is the result of many things all coming together: A committed and well-trained staff, a strong partnership between our home and school communities, generous support from parents through PTA and Palo Alto Partners in Education (PiE), and of course our amazing students who do their best learning in school each day.

The classroom teachers at Hoover are incredible. Their focus on the whole child and engaging each one of them where they are is remarkable to see. Well-trained, instructionally exceptional, with the right balance of structure and choice, I can honestly say that I would be happy to have my own children in any of our classes. They are a collaborative group which makes each one of our grade level teams especially strong. They are intentional in their craft and understand individual needs. Our teachers are extremely communicative and open to meeting to discuss your child’s academic and/or social-emotional growth.

Hoover’s Art, PE, and Music instructors work with our students daily to engage them physically, socially, and emotionally. This, of course, translates to happy and well-rounded children who are much more engaged in and excited about their academic learning. Thanks to PiE, Instructional Assistants in Math, Literacy, and Science work with all levels of children as a whole class, small group, and individually to meet the needs of every learner. It is a very engaging and exciting place to be for kids!

There are many opportunities for parents to get involved at Hoover. Joining PTA or SSC are two ways that will allow you to help us improve our school by affecting change. Both PTA and SSC support our focus on academically strong and socially connected children by organizing school events, ensuring clear communication between home and school, and most important of all supporting teachers. Parents help us as ABC readers in our Project Cornerstone Program; they help by volunteering in the mornings to help make sure kids are safe on the way to school; they volunteer as yard supervisors at lunch time to assist with student safety; they sign up as room parents; and so much more. We love our parents, and we couldn’t do it without them!

I encourage you to visit Hoover during our 3 Open House days throughout the year to get a better idea what happens inside our classrooms. The dates are October 9, 2018, February 7, 2019, and March 27, 2019. We start with a quick welcome at 8:00 am then it’s off to the classrooms until 10:00 am. This is for parents only – no little ones, please – and all we ask is that you are quietly observing the learning taking place in the rooms. We look forward to seeing you!

It is my honor to be the principal of this exceptional school, and I invite you to learn more about our programs, strategies, and values within the pages of this website.

We are the Hoover Hedgehogs!

With warmest regards,

Jim Sherman
